In a rare fight for the important position, the ruling BJP-led NDA's nominee Om Birla was chosen as the 18th Lok Sabha's speaker on Wednesday by a voice vote in the House. Birla, a three-term BJP member of parliament from Kota in Rajasthan, served as the previous House's speaker.
The eight-time Congress MP from Mavelikara in Kerala, Kodikunnil Suresh, the INDIA bloc's nominee, and Birla faced off in the Lok Sabha following the inability of the Opposition alliance and the Narendra Modi-led NDA government to come to an agreement. It was anticipated that Birla would breeze through because the NDA had the numbers on its side.
