Fact check: Is the IRS reintroducing the 2021 child tax credit program in 2024?

Amidst rumors about an $8,700 stimulus check, there is another circulating claim suggesting that the IRS plans to reinstate the 2021 child tax credit program. Various unofficial sources on social media are asserting that children under the age of six could receive $300 monthly. However, the accuracy of these claims remains uncertain.

A Facebook post circulated on June 9 asserts that beginning in July, children under six years old will receive $300 monthly, while those aged six to 17 will receive $250. The post garnered over 100 shares within one week, with similar versions spreading across multiple social media platforms.

"The post stated, 'In 2024, the IRS will initiate monthly payments: $300 on the 15th for children under six and $250 for those aged six to seventeen. The CTC Monthly Payments 2024 from the IRS are anticipated to commence on July 15, 2024, for all eligible recipients.'"

The claim is entirely false as it misrepresents a program that existed under the American Rescue Plan, where advance child tax credit payments were issued directly to parents between July and December 2021. Importantly, these payments were intended for parents, not directly for children.

Amidst growing speculation, experts confirmed to USA Today that there are no plans to implement such programs in July 2024. Moreover, the claim is not listed on the official IRS website. Lisa Greene-Lewis, a tax expert for TurboTax, clarified, "There were advance payments for the tax year 2021 under the American Rescue Plan, but those COVID relief measures have expired," as reported by the outlet.
