Masterpieces that have been taken, plundered, or gone missing for decades have given rise to an enduring mystique.
Absence has made the heart grow fonder for long-lost artistic masterpieces, from Vincent Van Gogh's "Poppy Flowers" to Rembrandt's vanishing masterpiece, "Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee," to works looted by the Nazis by artists like Gustav Klimt.
The early Baroque painting "Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence," created by Italian artist Caravaggio in 1609 and hanging in a church in Palermo, Sicily, was stolen by criminals in 1969. Its whereabouts are still unknown 55 years later.
