Actor Manoj Bajpayee claims he first came to notice as a star in the crime movie Satya (1988), his breakout picture in which he portrayed the legendary mobster Bhiku Mhatre. The actor who gained notoriety for portraying the Mumbai-based criminal, Bajpayee, claimed to have created the character's appearance entirely from scratch, considering the type of clothing and material he would use.

In a Galatta India interview, Bajpayee disclosed that he received a budget of Rs 25,000 to style his character in the Ram Gopal Varma film. The actor remembered how, in an attempt to create Bhiku Mhatre as faithfully as possible, he would browse every store in Bandra's Hill Road market.
