UP Court Requires Rahul Gandhi's Presence in Defamation Case on July 2

As per PTI, an MP-MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has directed Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, to personally appear in court on July 2. This order relates to a defamation case filed against him for allegedly making objectionable remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Rahul Gandhi is mandated to appear the next day for a complaint lodged against him by BJP leader Vijay Mishra.

According to PTI, complaint lawyer Santosh Kumar Pandey mentioned that Ram Pratap sought to intervene in the case. Gandhi's lawyer, Kashi Prasad Shukla, argued that Pratap was not connected to the matter. Nevertheless, the court insisted on Rahul Gandhi's presence in the proceedings.

Earlier this year, Gandhi paused his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ on February 20 to attend a bail hearing.

The defamation complaint against Rahul Gandhi dates back to August 4, 2018, stemming from comments made during a press conference in Bengaluru. Gandhi criticized the BJP, accusing them of double standards in advocating for clean politics while their party president was accused in a murder case, referring to Amit Shah, who was then BJP's chief.

Rahul Gandhi is also embroiled in another defamation case for which he received bail from a Bengaluru court. The BJP had alleged that Congress leaders circulated misleading advertisements targeting its party members, including the former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

The Congress leader was granted bail in the case, and the next hearing is scheduled to resume on June 30. Former Congress MP DK Suresh offered property valued at Rs. 75 lakh as security for Gandhi's bail.
