Why it's important for women to use additional caution when they go outside in the sun

Menstrual periods in women can be affected by the intense summer heat, among other negative effects on our bodies. Many people are unaware that heatwaves can alter the flow, duration, and even the strength of cramps and other symptoms associated with a woman's period by upsetting the delicate hormonal balance.

Extreme heat's effects on hormone balance
"Extreme heat can disrupt the hormonal balance that regulates menstrual cycles," says Dr. Vinutha G, senior consultant gynecologist and obstetrics and women health expert at Athreya Super Speciality Hospitals, Bengaluru. The stress hormone cortisol can obstruct the hypothalamus's ability to secrete gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
