In the midst of an election struggle, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal leaves jail.

The Supreme Court on Friday granted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal temporary bail until June 1 in the excise policy case, a move that could have a major impact on the current general elections and the political climate in Delhi. The court rejected the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) argument that allowing Kejriwal to campaign for political purposes would amount to giving politicians preferential treatment and emphasized the value of elections in democracies. But the bench was adamant that he not carry out his principal ministerial responsibilities during this time. Using a "holistic and libertarian view," a bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta noted that even if the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been charged with major money laundering, he has not been convicted, does not have criminal antecedents and is not a threat to society.
