Any small-time real estate agent in Tullur village, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, will have a map on the wall that shows the intricate layout of the capital city of Amaravati.

The Amaravati metropolis, which covers 217 square kilometers, was the pet project of TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu. It began to take shape in 2015, just a year after Naidu was appointed chief minister of Andhra Pradesh after the state's split.

2019 saw a pause to the city's development, nevertheless, as Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy led the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) to a resounding victory in the state Assembly elections. The city was named for Andhra Pradesh's Buddhist tradition.


Following his appointment as chief minister, Jagan established three state capitals: Kurnool as the "judicial capital," Amaravati as the "legislative capital," and Visakhapatnam as the "executive capital." This decision caused all development projects in Amaravati to be put on hold.

The Amaravati capital region is expected to enjoy a revival defined by the construction and real estate boom, whose green shoots are evident, with the TDP storming back to power by winning the current Andhra polls.

A sign of a shift in the circumstances was provided by Alluri Narayana Raju, the director of Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC) Urban Infrastructure Ltd, one of the major construction companies in charge of Amaravati's infrastructure development, who met Naidu in Delhi on June 5 to congratulate him on his election victory.
