Scientists Want To Construct Homes On The Moon Using "Space Bricks" Inspired By Lego
Building houses on the Moon is becoming a global priority for space agencies. NASA, a US space agency, created the Artemis program with the goal of having people live on the moon by 2040.
According to space.com, the European Space Agency (ESA) is investigating a novel method for building structures on the moon by transforming space dust into Lego-like blocks. This innovative concept uses readily transportable and assembleable modular, interconnecting bricks to solve the difficulties associated with construction on the lunar surface. According to the site, since astronauts would be using materials present on the lunar surface, it will also be an affordable method.
The loose, broken material that covers the Moon's surface, known as lunar regolith, is used in ESA's method to make bricks. ESA is able to create sturdy bricks on the Moon itself through a 3D printing process known as "sintering," which entails heating the regolith to a temperature slightly below its melting point in order to fuse the particles together. By eliminating the need to ship bulky construction supplies from Earth, this method drastically lowers expenses and logistical difficulties.
The modularity of Lego-style blocks makes them an excellent choice for building on Mars. These moon blocks join and rearrange with ease, much like regular Lego bricks, enabling a wide range of adaptable and scalable building designs. This adaptability is essential for surviving in the hostile and erratic lunar environment.
