The ruling NDA chose to renominate BJP MP Om Birla for the role of Lok Sabha Speaker without making a decision regarding the Deputy Speakership, which has left the government and opposition in a deadlock. In response, the Opposition nominated Kerala-based Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh for Speaker, thereby establishing an uncommon battle for the prestigious position.
Government sources stated that the Congress cannot "dictate" terms by stating that it will only back the NDA's speaker nominee if the Opposition is awarded the position of Deputy Speaker. However, the government will engage with the opposition on the matter. Senior government ministers declared that it was unacceptable to set such conditions.
