What happens to your body if you fast for three days?

The human body is an incredibly durable and adaptable machine that can withstand periods of scarcity and deprivation. However, when the body goes without food for a lengthy period of time, it goes through a series of fundamental physiological changes in order to sustain its vital processes.

While fasting is a long-standing Indian custom, Dr. Palleti Siva Karthik Reddy explains what occurs when we go without food for three days in a row.

Dr. Palleti Siva Karthik Reddy, MBBS, MD General Medicine, a consulting physician, notes, "When you fast for three days, your body goes through a number of physiological changes. Initially, your body converts stored glucose into energy. Within the first 24 hours, this glycogen is depleted, and your body begins gluconeogenesis, which produces glucose from non-carbohydrate sources such as amino acids."
