Food is an absolute necessity for human survival, but the one thing that nourishes us can also make us sick. According to the World Health Organization, tainted food causes an estimated 1.6 million illnesses worldwide each year.

Foodborne infections are predicted to cost low- and middle-income countries USD 110 billion per year in terms of diminished productivity and increased medical costs."
