Hyderabad: In defiance of the electorate's will in the most recent Assembly elections, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has chosen to petition the Supreme Court to have the party's MLAs disqualified for defecting to the ruling Congress. After three months, Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender shifted allegiance to the Congress; the party leadership made this choice after consulting with legal experts.

The Assembly Speaker is required to make a decision on disqualification petitions within three months, per a prior ruling by the Apex Court. The High Court is required to act promptly on these matters in accordance with paragraphs 30 and 33 of this ruling.

In the High Court, a hearing addressing Danam Nagender's disqualification is set for June 27. In the event that the High Court declines to declare Nagender ineligible, the BRS will move swiftly to appeal to the Supreme Court. The party intends to fight Nagender's defection as well as the Supreme Court party switches of other MLAs.

BRS working president KT Rama Rao said on Monday that the party will not be discouraged by BRS MLAs leaving the party to join the government Congress. He emphasized that the people's strength is always greater than that of the powerful.
