Was 56°C Actually Reached in Nagpur? What IMD Says About It

One day after the two of Nagpur's four automatic weather stations (AWS) reported 54 and 56 degree temperatures on Thursday, officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the temperature readings were incorrect due to a malfunctioning sensor.

"It is inaccurate and unofficial to say that the temperature on May 30 was 56 degrees Celsius. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Nagpur announced in a statement that the maximum temperature on May 30 was 44 degrees Celsius. The closest operational AWS is located at CICR, Nagpur.

On Thursday, the Nagpur AWS, which is located in the center of PDKV's 24-hectare open agricultural area near Ramdaspeth, off North Ambazari Road, registered 56 degrees.

54 degrees was also recorded by the other AWS at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Sonegaon.

near a related occurrence, the weather agency on Thursday questioned the accuracy of the sensors, one day after Mungeshpur near Delhi had reported 52.3 degrees on Wednesday. It can be the result of a local factor or a sensor error. IMD is looking through the information and sensors," the weather service had said.
According to news source IANS, up to twelve persons in Sundargarh, Odisha, may have passed out from heatstroke in the previous 24 hours.
